Frawgstomp and Functional Training
We pack each Frawgstomp event with grueling functional training inspired obstacles because we think they’re the toughest, most effective exercises on Earth. But unless we’re talking to pro athletes, military special forces, or personal trainers, the phrase tends to draw blank stares.
So let’s clear the air about what functional training is and why we think it’s the ultimate workout. If you haven’t ventured far from the usual gym-based exercises, listen up!
While you might build impressive strength and power doing what you’ve always done at the gym, all that training won’t necessarily come together to build one unstoppable human being.
Why? Because you’re mostly just targeting isolated muscles and putting them through a predictable, one-dimensional range of motion.
But in the real world, the body works as a complete bundle of muscle, bone, and nerve not isolated from one another. Shouldn’t your workouts reflect this reality?
Exactly.
Functional training incorporates a full spectrum of motion, recruiting muscles to work as a team and strengthening the relationship between your nervous and muscular systems.
These workouts not only build peak physical condition, they help you do ‘everyday’ human activities like walking, running, twisting, jumping, lifting - and then some.
Want to inject speed into your sprint, power into your backhand, and endurance into your back-country trek? Functional training delivers results for real life.
You don’t necessarily need special equipment to train meaningfully; in fact, your own body weight usually offers enough of a resistance workout. However, medicine balls, kettlebells, resistance bands, free weights, balance disks, and Swiss balls can all round out a functional training regimen.
